the fabulous life of…
I really do want you all to know that my life is not perfect, although lately, I kind of feel like it’s about as fabulous as I could want it to be (okay…so I’d love to be thin and rich, but barring those two items).
This weekend, I’m off to here with her, her, and her, to see this and this, and eat here and here.
How excited am I?!
take it and run thursday – motivation
Motivation is this weeks topic over on the Runners’ Lounge blog. So, what motivates me to run?
Of course there are the things that I think motivate most people, the desire to be in shape, the need to exercise, the camaraderie of running. But for me it is really all about the show. What do I mean by “the show”? I mean that I like being able to tell people that I have run a marathon. I like that, at one point in time, I ran five miles a day. I like that my calves get uber toned and look great in skirts. My motivation for doing many things is the desire to be a person who would do those things. I don’t know that I am especially adventurous by nature, but I want to be an adventurous person, so I do things that make me that way. I’m definitely not a natural runner, but I want to be a runner, so I run. Now, when I say this, it’s not that I go around talking about running all the time. I don’t. I just like knowing that I could talk about it, should the opportunity present itself.
That is the Big Motivation. And now the daily motivations:
- Running off whatever treat I couldn’t seem to resist.
- The amazing sense of accomplishment that comes at the end of a good run.
- It’s my outlet. In fact, my favorite runs (besides my 10 mile+ runs) are angry runs. I love running off my emotions. Best fuel ever! Unfortunately, I’m not really an angry person, so these don’t happen often.
- Getting to see the little improvements that seem to manifest themselves daily. A faster mile split, lower heart rate, longer endurance, etc.
- The muscle definition in my quads. This one is just for me since I’m not in the habit of wearing clothing that shows off my quads, but I love it!
- My running music. I know this might sound weird, but for some reason there are certain songs that I can only listen to while running. Maybe I feel too old to listen to them otherwise. I don’t really know.
- Watching the miles on my sidebar add up.
- The prospect of my next race…which is why I always have one scheduled.
- Other runners.
- Running blogs – I love reading about others’ running experiences.
What kills my motivation?
- Anything that sounds more enjoyable than running, which most days could be watching the wind blow, but is more often sleeping (the big run killer) or other time commitments. But, to get through that, I just plan. Like tonight, my day won’t end until 10:30 pm, but I’ll be heading to the gym to get a good run in since I won’t be running at all this weekend.
Wow, I sure am inspirational. You all know my secret, now. I don’t actually like running. But I like knowing that I run, so even though every mile (with the rare exception) is a bit painful, there are moments when I do enjoy it because I think, “I am a runner.”
So, for those of you who think you could never be a runner because you hate running, think again. You can totally do it. I think a few of my running friends would agree with me. (See, that was motivational, right?)
ETA: I forgot one of my biggest motivators. Setting an example for my darling nieces and nephews. I want to be the cool aunt who runs marathons (since the “rich aunt” position has already been filled). And on that note, here’s the newest member of my family: Hope Elizabeth.

No…it’s not the one I have been waiting for. This one came out of nowhere. I thought I would get accepted into this particular MBA program, but I didn’t think it would happen during my interview. And this interview…was so enjoyable. And then, out of nowhere, “Well, you’re in.”
What? Seriously? Just like that?
I was shocked. Suddenly, this is all so real. I mean, theoretically, I knew I’d get in somewhere, but theory and reality are two different things.
And one more reason my dad is seriously, seriously rad…I came home to this sign on my front door. He really is the greatest!
I looked much better than this at my interview, in case you were wondering.
the fabulous life of…
And why is my life fabulous? (No, it’s not because I have heard from the aforementioned school and was accepted.) It’s because I get to park in the garage.
This may seem minor for all of you non-snow state dwellers, but I assure you it is a big deal. About a month ago, I made an off-handed remark to my dad, on the way out the door, about how I knew that the deepest desire of his heart was to clean out the middle garage stall so that I could park there for the winter. This is how I generally make requests to my father. He knows that when I say, “I bet you really want to…”, I will be asking for something.
To be honest, this was one I didn’t think would happen, but when I arrived home I had a garage door opener waiting on the railing by my front door (yes, I have my own front door, located in said garage) and my dad magically appeared to receive the praise that he totally deserved. My dad is rad!
Last week, the chain on the garage door broke, rendering my garage door opener completely obsolete. I was forced (yes, forced) to park outside in the cold for three whole days. It was awful…but considering there was no snow, it was not so bad. Last night, I arrived home to a new (much smaller, much nicer) garage door opener on my railing.
I woke up to a huge snow storm. There was already about six inches on the driveway. As usual, I got to be late (3 am…the joys of more school applications), and thus, did not want to get out of bed, so I didn’t until about 30 minutes after I should have. You cannot my joy at the realization, after peering out the window, that my car was parked in the nice warm garage and there would be no standing in the freezing cold scraping the mounds of snow from the windows.
Yes…I am totally spoiled. Isn’t better that I know it and appreciate it, though?
P.S. In case you are wondering, I have yet to hear from the school mentioned in my previous post. I have now been invited to interview with four of the five schools to which I have already applied. And I am in the process of applying to four more. January 15th, the day the last application is due, will be such a happy, happy day!
P.P.S. In case you were curious, my brother is hilarious. His is comment number 2! I love that kid.
