spt – hello

Quick and easy this week!! SPT posts have been pretty light these past few weeks. Summer schedules are so much more hectic, aren’t they? Whatever happened those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer?” I’ve got the crazy ones covered!! I sure could use some of the lazy, hazy ones…so this week, no challenge, no props, no tours of your hometown. just you!! Can’t wait to see you!

So, here’s the thing. I know it’s called “Self-Portrait” Tuesday, the idea being to take a picture of myself for this week’s challenge, which I could have done, however I decided to have my friend, Sarah, help me out and take some pictures. She was helping me with my new banner last night (isn’t it fantastic!), and by helping, I mean creating while I sat in her office amazed by her design skills (and I have to thank Kelly, too, for creating such a fantastic font), and as we were leaving her office, I asked her if she would take a few pics of me for today’s challenge. I hope no one’s offended by the “cheating”, but I really was due for some new pics that I really like…so here they are:

Yep, I think she did a good job! And there’s nothing like a good picture to make you feel better about life, no matter how much crap you’re dealing with!

spt – through the eyes of love

“This week’s challenge is interactive. a little less “self-portrait,” a little more “self-love.” Now, go ahead and hand your camera to the person on your left. No-one there? Okay, how about this: hand your camera to your little, your husband, your aunt, your best friend. Have them snap your photo. Ask them to share with you one thing they love about you in the picture. Make sure you share their comments when you post your spt.

Next step: take a good long look at your new photo. Think about the response you got from the photographer. Did they love your eyes? Did they love your goofy expression? Did they love your red shirt?Do you see the same things? Do you love the same things they love? Had you forgotten that you love your smile? Or your freckles? Go ahead… fall in love with yourself again! I can’t wait to *see* you through new eyes on Tuesday!”

So, here’s my picture. I didn’t actually have this picture taken for this purpose, but being that I’m in Arizona and don’t have my friends around who would help me out with this (and my sister just doesn’t get my blogging obsession), I thought I’d use this picture that my friend, Kelly took when we were at Happy Sumo a while ago. I didn’t love this picture. I had kind of rushed out the door to work that morning, pulling my hair back really fast without applying any makeup and I felt kind of grungy. But then, Kelly emailed it to me and said how much she liked it and how cute she thought it was.

I’m sure I responded that I didn’t love it, because that’s what I do. But the more I’ve looked at it, the more I like it, too. I like that I just look genuinely happy…and I like my smile.

Thanks, Lelly, for another great challenge.

spt – americana

This week’s self-portrait challenge: It’s as American as apple pie!

“This week’s challenge is to look around your home and help us showcase the history and folklore of America! Dust off your Americana relics! Let no wagon wheel go unturned! Let no bobble head doll go unnoticed!!”

Not an easy challenge for me. First of all, my home is not my own. Second of all, even thinking about when my home was my own, when I lived in my own house that I decorated, I had no Americana. None. Zero. Zilch.

Ever since I can remember, any home I’ve lived in has been full of ‘les objets d’arts étrangers‘. My grandparents lived in Japan for three years, so there house was full of Asian paraphernalia. My mother loved to travel, so our home was full of Hummel figurines, Lilliput Lane Cottages, Lladros, and any other number of assorted foreign pieces.

And I followed suit, only my obsession has been centered around the francophone countries (with the exception of a few Lladros which I picked up on different trips to Spain). Having started studying French at the age of 11, living in Belgium as an exchange student and then going on a mission for my church during which time I live in both Switzerland and France, I suppose the love of all things French makes sense.

So, here are some photos of the few things that I have pulled out of storage, as well as a picture I “stole” off the internet. Interestingly, most of the stuff I pulled out of storage is kitchen related (that’s what happens when you work at Williams-Sonoma for three years as a second job for the discount).

The truth is, I own nothing that I would say falls into the category of “Americana”. It’s not that I’m not patriotic (I love this country), but I guess I think that this is where I live and I want to display the things that show where I’ve been.

And while I have a number of Lladro, this one happens to be my favorite. This particular figurine was commissioned by the LDS church when they built a temple in Madrid. Combining my faith with my love of Lladros (which probably stems more from me associating them with my mom than actually loving porcelain figurines), when I had the opportunity to go back to Spain for work a couple of years ago, I knew that this was the one “souvenir” I wanted. Luckily, I purchased it right before my bag was stolen and my credit cards were long gone.

I have to say that I absolutely love SPT. It makes me think about things I don’t normally think about it…and that is kind of rare, since my brain never seems to stop. Oh, and the picture of the pillows at the top is just because they are red, white and blue. That’s the most American thing I own…my bedding.

spt – the colors of your world

So, in the blogosphere, there are some people who do this thing called Self-Portrait Tuesday. I love the idea, so I’ve decided to participate. The challenge this week…the colors of your world.

Well, my world right now consists of a very, very small space over the garage and under the roof. I live in this little 350 sq. ft. studio that is always cluttered (because, well, it’s 350 sq. ft.). And while I’d be happy to share pictures of the chaos, I don’t think they’d do a very good job at showing the “colors of my world”, since this isn’t really “my” world, but more my dad’s (I’m living under his roof).

Instead, I dug through old photos to find some that show my favorite color. Or colors, as it changed sometime before my senior year in high school. When I was little I loved purple. I wanted purple everything, or more specifically, lavendar.

And then, somewhere along the way, I decided green was my favorite color. Maybe it’s because my eyes are green. Maybe it’s because my mom’s eyes were green. Maybe it’s because green goes with anything. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the beautiful Bay Area, where the hills and trees are green through most of the year. Whatever it is, I love green. And, while there are some greens that I don’t like, there are many more that I do, although, if I had to narrow it down, my favorite green is probably celadon. Partly because the name of it comes from a French name (and I love all things French), partly because it’s fun to say, but mainly because I think it is a really pretty green.

And the nice thing with having like green and purple as favorite colors is that they look so good together.
