and she’s off

I head to Nashville tomorrow for V’s Welcome Weekend. After that, it’s D-day. I have to let V know by April 15th. I think I’ve made up my mind…and it’s probably not going to be V, but I have to go out there one more time, just to be sure.

Well, and to see these people. They are the best! Seriously. I had so much fun with them in January, I couldn’t pass up another opportunity to head out there.

It’s sure to be a rough weekend filled with lots of emotion, because at one point I was dead set on going to V. But life happens, circumstances change, new information becomes available, and decisions evolve. Isn’t it lovely?

As I won’t be posting anything until Monday (I have pretty strict rules about blogging while on trips…I don’t do it), I have left you with some fun downloads. They are on the sidebar (so you’ll actually have to visit the blog).

Stay tuned for Decision ’08 (well, the one that really matters to me at this moment), when all shall be revealed. Well, most. I have to leave something for the tabloids when I become rich and famous. Ha ha ha.

musical monday (a day late?)

So, Sarah, Emily, Heidi and I headed to Salt Lake on Saturday to see the Hotel Cafe Tour. It was a great show.

Cary Brothers

The song in this video (and it’s not complete) is called Honestly.

My favorite song is probably Ride.

Meiko performing Reasons to Love You. Her album is rad!

Cary Brothers feat. Ingrid Michaelson, covering The Thompson Twins classic (do they have classics?), If You Were Here.

A little Ingrid on her own performing The Hat.

Dan Wilson (lead singer of Semisonic) performing Easy Silence (made famous by the Dixie Chicks).

Some combined singing in the crowd…it was kind of amazing.

Despite a crappy beginning, my weekend turned out just fine. Oh, and…it turns out I totally went to high school with the drummer. He didn’t remember me (nice…I’d love to say it was the alcohol, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t), but my weird memory never forgets anyone.

*Yes Shannon, I did totally copy your idea. Just remember, imitation is the highest form of flattery…or so they say.

the fabulous life of…

Before I share what I want to share here, I have to tell you all that I’ve had a pretty crappy week overall. I just don’t want you all to think that my life is peaches and sunshine. I assure you it is not (I’m going back to WW tomorrow…gag). But, despite my crappy week and pity kegger (much bigger than a party…sadly, though, no alcohol was involved, so it’s a bit of a misnomer), there always seems to be a bit of sunshine.

This week, the sunshine came in the form of a fantastic concert. It’s that time of year again, thank goodness. Yesterday, right after work, Sarah, Candice and I headed to Salt Lake, where we met up with Emily, Heidi and my friend, Rebecca, to see Ingrid Michaelson and Joshua Radin in concert.

It was a great show. I hate the venue it was at, but otherwise, fantastic! I love Joshua and was excited to see him again (although, I now see that he has some issues…which is probably why I’m attracted). Ingrid was phenomenal. Sadly, I forgot to take my camera in (well, I remembered, but by the time I did, the line was starting to move), so no great video footage of Ingrid and her bad self (she’s hilarious) or Joshua telling the story of his sad breakups. We did manage to get it after for some great pics with the artists. Candice is also planning becoming BFFs with Ingrid, so that will make me Ingrid’s BFF once removed. How awesome is that?

And here are some downloads for your listening pleasure:

Paperweight – Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk. Sadly, they broke up, so he can’t play this song anymore. But the breakup did inspire a great new song called You’ve Got Growing Up to Do …ouch. And that’s why I’ll never date a musician. (You can listen to his new stuff on his MySpace page).
The Fear You Won’t Fall – Joshua Radin
Breakable – Ingrid Michaelson
The Hat – Ingrid Michaelson

take it and run thursday – strength and flexibility (and winners)

This week’s Take It and Run Thursday: strength and flexibility. Yuck, is all I have to say. Well, and what follows in the next two paragraphs.

First, strength training is one of my least favorite activities on the face of the planet (just before stretching, incidentally). I will share my little anecdote from years past though…which may inspire me to mend my ways. When I was a sophomore in college, I began running consistently for the first time. My only goal was to lose weight (and of course I wanted to run faster because I am competitive with myself). Strength training became a part of the routine when two things happened; first, I hit a plateau and was advised by multiple people that strength training would help, and second, Gold’s Gym (where I belonged) began offering strength training classes. No brain work, no counting reps, no keeping track of anything. My kind of strength training. I started to lose weight again…and my running sped up. Now, I occasionally make it to the strength classes at 24 (my new gym), but I really rely on my favorite video, Turbo Jam – Turbo Sculpt. I love it…I just need to do it more often. So, my goal for this week: do strength workouts three times before next Thursday.

On to flexibility: I’m sure it’s important to stave off injury. I am not flexible. I was actually discussing flexibility with my brother and sister-in-law this weekend. I had just returned from my fabulous run with Christy and was attempting to stretch. Well, I suppose I was stretching. It’s just no one watching me would have thought I was. We are about the most inflexible (mainly physically, but you could probably apply that to other areas) family on the face of the planet. When I cheered in high school, I had to do the splits everyday (seven days a week) in order to not lose the ability to do them. As I am not in the practice of kicking my legs in the air these days, my flexibility is basically non-existent. So, goal number two for this week: do my yoga video one time. Yes, just once. I am all about realistic goals.

Thank you, Runners’ Lounge, for inspiring me to do better. If you want some actual advice or information about benefits, I’m sure you can go there and read other people’s much more informative posts.

And now, for our winners from last week’s contest:

  1. For the person who guessed my number 2 song first: Janssen.
  2. As for the random winner from the comments made (chosen by one of my student employees): Beth.

Mixes will be in the mail on Monday!

a little mika love

The Mika concert was amazing. After spending over TWO HOURS in line in the freezing cold, we discovered that the reason the doors opened at 8 pm, rather than the 6 o’clock time we had been told, was that Mika’s instruments and costumes were not in Salt Lake, but somewhere on the road. Happily, Mika decided to play the show anyway, despite his insurance company’s recommendation to cancel and it was the MOST AMAZINGLY, INCREDIBLY FUN concert I have ever been to. The video above is the Grace Kelly (I started filming a little into the song) and at the end is Mika’s fabulous welcome (oh, and he’s British and a musician, so he swears).

I got a few songs on video. The best song, without a doubt, was Lollipop (a song I didn’t get on video). He went right into it from another song (a song whose tempo is quite a bit faster than Lollipop’s) and he was all about audience participation. Sadly, he didn’t play Big Girl (You Are Beautiful), but other than that, I can honestly say that I have never been so pleasantly surprised in my life.

Before he came out to play, Sarah said, “This better be an amazing show after standing in line for two hours just to get in the door.” Neither one of us was disappointed at all. And, due to the delay and lack of the “real show”, we were all refunded $10, making it that much better. Hopefully Sarah will mention all of the zoobies that were in line with us. All I can say is that if you haven’t experienced life in Utah, you just can’t know what you are missing.
