hair dilemmas

To chop or not to chop? That is the question.

I have an appointment with Laura tomorrow at 6 am. (Yes, I have an amazing stylist who is going to meet me at 6 am since I am going out of town tomorrow for eight whole days and my hair is way overdo for a cut and color!) Stay tuned…

www – week 1

SPOILER WARNING – Don’t click on the “movie popcorn” link if you ever want to be able to enjoy it again!

So…week one is over. I have to say, it really wasn’t bad. It’s an interesting experience to write down everything you eat during a day and to really think about all of your food choices. After one week of this (well, one day really) the 20 lbs that magically appeared this year made a lot more sense. Were any of you aware of just how horrible movie popcorn is for you? Well, I didn’t have a clue, until I was heading to the movies Friday night with Kelly and realized I had quite a few points left so perhaps I could have some of that delicious buttery goodness. Wrong!

I am a firm believer in non-deprivation eating. If this is going to be a permanent change, then I can’t feel like there are “bad foods”, foods that I can never eat. All things in moderation. This movie popcorn discovery…a little disheartening. But, I was not going to be discouraged so easily. I decided to do something my mom would have done (and something I would have that would have mortified me as a teenager). I pulled out some microwave popcorn, popped it up, put in some Ziploc bags and stuffed it in my purse before heading to the theater. I was totally satisfied, not deprived and happy to have found a solution.

As the week progressed, I discovered all sorts of little changes that made a huge difference in what foods were available to me; a little Splenda here, some non-fat cream cheese there. It’s amazing how quickly you can cut calories if you just pay a little attention.

The great thing about Weight Watchers is you really can eat anything you want, but with all of the fruits, vegetables, milk, water and healthy oil you need to get in, there’s not a whole lot of room for poor choices…well, not if you are trying to follow the program the way they have it set up. In my efforts to not feel deprived, I also discovered all kinds of “cheap treats”. Cheap, not because of the cost in dollars, but because of the cost in points. Healthy food is definitely more costly than the cheap, fast stuff, but so worth it.

In the process of this paradigm shift, I rediscovered just how much I love to cook, and I figured out ways to cook for one that made it much more enjoyable. For instance, when buying meat or seafood, I went right to the meat counter, as opposed to trying to find the prepackaged stuff. That way I was able to get exactly the amount I wanted, nothing wasted. I also menu planned so that when I purchased produce, I could use it for multiple dishes and not waste any.

But, my discovery of the week was Cooking Light magazine. There are all of these great recipes and all of the nutritional information is there, as well as the serving size. I tried a number of them and like all of them, with a few I absolutely loved. My favorite was this fabulous Grilled Salmon with Apricot-Mustard Glaze. I tweaked it just a bit to lower the calorie content, and because I didn’t have apricot nectar available. I used Diet Coke instead (I’m not drinking it, but I had some, so I threw it in) and it turned out great.

So, how did my first week turn out? I lost 5 lbs! I am thrilled!

The challenge this week will be traveling. Traveling always makes eating healthy and exercising more difficult. I welcome any tips you might have.

You’re it!

My roommate and I once: skinny dipped in Hawaii. Is that too much information?

Never in my life have I: jumped out of a plane.

High school was: a mixture of serious highs and lows. To quote Charles Dickens, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”

When I’m nervous: my mouth gets really dry. I hate it. I become crazy cotton mouth.

My hair: is thick and grows really fast. I now realize just what a great blessing that is.

When I was 5: I walked home from school almost every day with my friend, Seth. It was about a mile…how times have changed.

When I turn my head left: a LoveSac, still in its bag because I don’t have room for it in my apartment.

I should be: taking a shower and going to bed. I want to be up by 5:00 and I need my sleep.

By this time next year: I’ll know where I’m going to grad school, provided some school will overlook my bad grades and I do amazingly well on the GMAT.

My favorite aunt is: whichever one I’m talking to…and they are the ones who call themselves that.

I have a hard time understanding: some of the things people do…like children not in car seats/seat belts.

You know I like you if: I call you.

My ideal breakfast is: Swedish pancakes, made by my grandma. I can make them, but Grandma Goesch’s are ALWAYS better.

If you visit my home town: you will understand why I am in love with it. And why I have such horrible spending habits.

If you spend the night at my house: you’ll be in Queen Creek, AZ, spending the night with a very nice family who currently reside in it and pay rent (which, unfortunately, no longer covers the mortgage).

My favorite blonde is: Leif Stacey, at least today.

My favorite brunette is: my niece, B.

The animal I would like to see flying besides birds: probably pigs. Think of all the things that would happen because pigs would be flying.

I shouldn’t have been: so impatient…with everything. Patience is a virtue…that I do not possess.

Last night I: was very excited because my niece was born perfectly healthy, and cute to boot.

A better name for me would be: I don’t know. I love my name!

I’ve been told I look like: my sisters.

If I could have any car, it would be: a Range Rover, with free service and gas (they break down and guzzle fuel, but I love them). If those aren’t included, then a Lexus IS 350.

Tagging: kelly, amanda, anne.

spt – the colors of your world

So, in the blogosphere, there are some people who do this thing called Self-Portrait Tuesday. I love the idea, so I’ve decided to participate. The challenge this week…the colors of your world.

Well, my world right now consists of a very, very small space over the garage and under the roof. I live in this little 350 sq. ft. studio that is always cluttered (because, well, it’s 350 sq. ft.). And while I’d be happy to share pictures of the chaos, I don’t think they’d do a very good job at showing the “colors of my world”, since this isn’t really “my” world, but more my dad’s (I’m living under his roof).

Instead, I dug through old photos to find some that show my favorite color. Or colors, as it changed sometime before my senior year in high school. When I was little I loved purple. I wanted purple everything, or more specifically, lavendar.

And then, somewhere along the way, I decided green was my favorite color. Maybe it’s because my eyes are green. Maybe it’s because my mom’s eyes were green. Maybe it’s because green goes with anything. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the beautiful Bay Area, where the hills and trees are green through most of the year. Whatever it is, I love green. And, while there are some greens that I don’t like, there are many more that I do, although, if I had to narrow it down, my favorite green is probably celadon. Partly because the name of it comes from a French name (and I love all things French), partly because it’s fun to say, but mainly because I think it is a really pretty green.

And the nice thing with having like green and purple as favorite colors is that they look so good together.
