new hair

For those of you who have been reading my blog since its inception (maybe that’s just me) and those of you who know me in real life, you know that I am no stranger to new hairstyles. I have been very fortunate in the hair and forehead department in that I can do just about anything with my hair and it grows like a weed.

Up until I chopped my hair off in the middle of my mission, it had been long and blond for years. And even after that, I didn’t really do much with it post-mission. It was still blond and varied in length occasionally, but nothing to drastic. And then I started working at a salon…
I have had all kinds of crazy styles over the past eight years and I’ve added colors, although up until last November, I would have always been able to call myself a “blond.” And then I decided that it was time for a major change. While I no longer want the crazy styles that were appropriate while working for a trendy salon, I do always want to keep my hair updated and fun and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE trying new styles (especially when I have a stylist as good as the famous Christie Somers).
Feb. 9 – I love my hair!
So, the picture is from my iPhone and it’s dark…not the best quality (plus it’s the end of the day and I look a little hashed), but it’s a super cute, very dark, A-line bob and I LOVE it!

When I purchased my Nikon D-40 I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I have always liked taking pictures, but I never knew how fun it good be until I got a digital SLR. Seriously, it is one of the best investments I’ve ever made…and someday I will upgrade, but I will always keep my D-40 just because it’s so light and easy to keep in my purse or wherever.

And because I feel like I should put pictures in a post about pictures, here are a few.

super bowl sunday

People who know me know that I don’t really watch/follow professional sports. I just can’t be bothered. I will always love the 49ers and Oakland A’s (my hometown teams), but I just did not grow up in a sports watching family. We’d much rather be out doing than at home watching. That said, I do enjoy watching the Super Bowl as a social event.

Today, it was just a small gathering (mainly family), but we used it as an excuse to make lots of fattening food (I made these bacon and blue cheese stuffed chicken breasts which were delicious) and just enjoy hanging out together. We watched the entire game (with commercials) and had a blast. Maybe it’s really just that I love any excuse for a party, but I’m going to be specific with this one.

99.9% of chick flicks

I am what you could call easily entertained when it comes to movies. It doesn’t take much for me to enjoy a trip to the cinema. And that is especially true when it comes to romantic comedies. Sure, they are all very formulaic and incredibly contrived, but I don’t care. I love them. Whether it’s because they are really good, or because I’m mocking the movie the entire time I’m watching it, it doesn’t matter. I’m happy either way.

more food love

Today, still feeling better, Sarah, Rebecca, and I ventured up to SLC to go to Bruges, this delicious frites and waffle place. In case you didn’t know this about me, I spend five months of high school in a little town in northeastern Belgium called La Calamine (emphasis on little). During those five months, as I recounted to my lovely friends today, I gained 35 lbs. Yes, you did read that right. I didn’t forget a decimal point. Rebecca joked that there should be a new food show about food that’s so good you gained xx amount of weight because you loved it that much.

Well, for me in Belgium, it was “les frites et les gaufres” (fries and waffles in English). If you’ve never experienced true Belgian fries (where they really originated), you need to and thanks to Bruges in SLC, you can do it in Utah (which is amazing considering how many things Utah lacks from an international perspective). Or, if you’re in NYC, Pommes Frites will do the trick as well. However, the waffles are a different story. I’m sure many of you have had a Belgian waffle, but what you probably have not had is a Liege waffle (the name of both a canton and a town in the francophone part of Belgium). These are waffles made from dough, not batter, with these delicious little sugar chunks throughout. They are dense and slightly sweet, with a delicious crust. Seriously, this is the ONLY place I have ever found these made fresh–if it comes already baked and the people just warm it up, don’t waste your money. If you are in the Salt Lake area, head to 300 W/300 S and you, too, might understand how a 15-year-old managed to gain 35 lbs in five months.
