guitar playin’ fool
I was over at Jen’s house a couple of weeks ago and noticed her guitar sitting there, looking a little neglected (I can’t imagine why, given her newlywed status) and so I pulled it out and started messing around with it. Learning to play the guitar is on “the list”, but that’s a little difficult when you don’t own one. She told me I could borrow it (did I ever mention that I have the greatest friends), so the guitar came home with me that night, along with a tuner and a couple of books.
I am proud to say that I can now play (albeit poorly) Amazing Grace and I’m quite please with myself…however, I am not the “guitar playin‘ fool” (in the good sense). My dad gets that title. We were both taking a little break from yard work the Saturday morning after I brought it home and I mentioned to him that I had just about taught myself how to play one song. His eyes lit up and he got all excited and asked me to bring it inside
. The next 20 minutes consisted of my dad playing and singing the songs he could remember how to play and sing. It was quite entertaining. Just one more reason I love my dad.
I love that you can see how much fun he’s having in these pictures!
summer is around the corner…
On Thursday, Jennifer had a little graduation party for her husband, Sungti. It was so fun. We had dinner outside and it was absolutely gorgeous (with just a slight chill as the evening wore on). A little different from my life in AZ. The following are some fun pictures of dinner and friends. And, in case anyone is wondering, I am still LOVING the new camera. I don’t know how my friends are feeling about it though. I think I snapped over 100 shots…no, they are not all here. Don’t worry.

Sarah got a little aggressive with her fork and I took a picture of it because my camera has created a moster.

The strawberry shortcake was amazing; fresh strawberries, homemade shortcake and freshly whipped cream. Divine!
I thought I’d include this little video clip because I feel it’s appropriate (the first scene, anyway) and hilarious.

It really was a perfect day. The food was delicious, the weather was beautiful and the company was ideal; just what an outdoor party should be.
playing with light and focus…
These are my two most favorite pictures, so far. I love the focus. I love the light. I like how the top one has a little more color (there was a little more light). I like how the lower one has such a blurred background (it was a little farther back). I love that I took them. I love that I am so easily impressed with myself. 🙂
I like this one, too. But these are the moments when I wish that I had a tripod. Do you like how I just purchased this camera and already I think I need a tripod? Because it was darker, the aperture was large and the shutter speed was slow, allowing enough light to enter…meaning that I had to hold very, very still. However, I do like the blurring in the background. The little points of light are where the sky was still showing through the tree.
This is what a picture looks like when you have the white balance set for indoor lighting, but you are not indoors.
And this is what the picture should have looked like. This happens to be the view from my backyard. Not bad. The house you are seeing there (the one towards the right, and yes it looks like two, but it’s one) belongs to my bishop. It’s quite amazing. He’s a neurosurgeon…and evidently, a pretty good one. What I missed in this shot is that, since I was not going for an off angle, I should have made sure that the house (as a point of reference) was level, which it is not.
This one has less to do with photography and more to do with the fact that this was my favorite cupcake from class Wednesday night. I love orange. I’ve decided it’s my new second favorite color (after green…maybe third, after green and purple).
And here is a series…indoor with flash. Way too much light.
Indoor without flash…too yellow.
Indoor with the flash and a smaller aperture. Still too much light, but getting better.
Indoor, all the lights on, no flash. Too yellow, but I do like the focus. I was attempting to get the center focused and the edges soft.
And here’s where I finally got it…at least got it for being a total amateur. Indoor, lights on, no flash, adjusted white balance.
I am absolutely loving discovering the world through the lens of a camera. I just look at things differently. And I am so excited for my first photography class (I’m signed up for one in May) so that start to actually know how to adjust my settings rather than the trial by error method. Once again, I have to put a shout out to KP for inspiring me (even if she didn’t know she was).
fun times with the new camera…
So, I broke down (it doesn’t require a lot to make that happen) and bought the new camera I’ve been wanting for forever. Well, kind of wanting for forever. I’ve wanted a new camera ever since I purchased one for the ex-fiance for his birthday, because it was so small and light-weight and my point and shoot is kind of a beastly dinosaur. So, I’ve been looking. But the other day, when I saw the pictures KP shot with her camera, I decided I really wanted a digital SLR. So, I did it. I am the proud new owner of a Nikon D40 SLR and I am so excited. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m loving it. After watching the AC photo shoot today (they were using my house for the back drop), I realized that a) I have a long way to go and b) I am excited to stage some pics and see what it can do (or what I can do with it). Here are my first attempts. Nothing too impressive, but I had a good time.
