attitude of gratitude ’10

It’s that time of year again. I won’t give the intro. If you don’t know what this is, you’ll catch on quickly.

  1. I’m grateful that I had parents who went to college and showed us, by their example, the value of education.
  2. I’m grateful to have a job I love and work with people I respect. I have not always been so blessed.
  3. I’m grateful for cable. (That might sound silly, but it’s very true.)

“Our realization of what is most important in life goes hand in hand with gratitude for our blessings.”
Thomas S. Monson, โ€œFinding Joy in the Journey,โ€ Ensign, Nov 2008

yard sale!

My friend’s parents are having a yard sale tomorrow and they are graciously letting me participate. If you are in Utah County and think I might have some stuff you want…please stop by. And tell your friends!

The address is:

1719 N. 820 W. in Orem

I am selling lots of clothes (sizes 14-18), shoes (8-8.5), bathroom decor, Pottery Barn valances and curtains (white), books, some furniture items, and a few home decor pieces (vases, silk flowers, really cute Pottery Barn pillow covers, etc), DVDs, some baking things from Williams-Sonoma, and other things I’m not remembering right now.

I’m not sure what time it’s starting…but will update once I have the info. Please come buy my stuff!

selling stuff…

For the next few days, I may or may not be using my blog to sell things. If you know ANYONE who might want some of this stuff, just direct them here. Thank you.

And the first item up for bid is some really cute (however, too juvenile for me) bedding. Would be great for a teen. It’s a complete set and you can find the listing here.

no longer homeless!

Trying to move to a new city where finding housing is like speaking a foreign language you don’t know has been…stressful. And I’m not an easily stressed out person (at least I don’t think I am). Among other difficulties, I haven’t paid rent for the past few years as I’ve been living at home for graduate school, I’m basically broke, and my credit…is less than stellar. And then there are all of these income rules in New York. On top of that, there are apartment brokers who are often dishonest and scheisty. Can you say, “super fun”?

Anyway, about two weeks ago I found my dream apartment. I mean…DREAM. Gorgeous brand new building, doorman, 17th floor, walk-in closet, gorgeous bathroom, and gourmet kitchen. It was only a studio, but big enough and stunning. I had looked at these apartments when I was visiting in February, but the only ones they had available at the time were way out of my budget. So, then, two weeks ago on craigslist I saw THE apartment. And for not too much rent. A girl was moving to Hong Kong and needed to find a subletter. It was like an answer to my prayers.
And then there were delays. And then I couldn’t get a hold of management to fill out the paperwork. And then I learned that having no rental history was going to make my life hell. And then…and then…and then. The straw that broke my will to be patient was when this very nice girl informed me that her new job might actually want her to be in New York, as opposed to Hong Kong. So…while I still really wanted the apartment, I started looking again.
That’s when I found a great ONE BEDROOM (this is a BIG deal on my budget) with a HUGE kitchen. It’s in an older building and on the ground floor, but it’s at the rear of the building, so quiet and safe, and it’s newly renovated, so it’s super clean and nice. Kelly went and looked at it for me (I’m not crazy!), and while this isn’t the glitzy glamorous apartment of my dreams, this kitchen will fit all of my stuff. It is $175 cheaper a month. And it gives me an excuse to have someone else do my laundry, since there’s no laundry in the building, but there is a wash and fold place right next door (the normal laundromat is a few blocks away).
In addition to all of those great things, the building manager was the one listing it, so no lame brokers, no credit checks, and a quick approval. (I applied on Friday and got approved on Saturday.)
All in all, I’m very excited! It’s a great apartment and I feel very good about my decision to be a little more practical. And if you want to see what it looks like, here are some pics. Yes, the bedroom is TINY, but trust me when I say that most of the kitchens in the apartments in my price range come with a fridge, a sink, a range, and maybe two overhead cabinets.

mother’s day thoughts

I don’t think it’s any secret to my closest friends that I don’t really like Mother’s Day. Not having a mother who’s alive and not having any children…well, you can see that it wouldn’t rank very high on my list of favorite holidays. It’s basically just a slap in the face. (I’m not bitter or anything, I swear ;-).

However, this year I’m going to not hate it…and the way I’m going to do that is to talk about how great I am as an aunt and go ahead and call myself an honorary mother. How’s that for obnoxious?
This won’t be long…just a list of why I feel like Mother’s Day can be about me, too. ๐Ÿ™‚
In my 16 years of being an aunt I have:
  • Helped take care of a number of newborns and/or their siblings
  • Changed enough poopy diapers to have at least one small child of my own
  • Helped with potty training – including cleaning poop out of underwear…my favorite
  • Been spit-up on, puked on, peed on, and pooped on…multiple times
  • Spent more than a few nights with a child sleeping next to me or on me…while I was not sleeping very much
  • Attended all but one first birthday party (and that was only because I was living in France on my mission)
  • Made a number of birthday cakes/invitations
  • And finally, if I were to add up all the hours I’ve spent watching my seven little munchkins (yes…I’m reserving the right to continue to call them all munchkins even though one is now 16), I would say I probably have a two-year-old
I realize that you mothers out there will all say that you couldn’t love anyone more than your own child and perhaps someday I will have my own children and agree, but I will say that, for today, I can’t imagine loving anyone more than my nieces and nephews.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

P.S. In case you wanted to know I spent my day watching my niece and nephew while my brother-in-law cleaned the house and my sister slept (she works nights) and then we had a lovely sushi dinner. I only wish that all of you mothers out there were lucky enough to have a sister like me. ๐Ÿ˜‰
